KASHMIRIS from around the world assembled in US to participate in Million Man March in front of the United Nations in New York. The march has been organized on 25 October, in the light of changing political scenario in South Asia region and non-performance of due role by the UN and international community including France, USA, Russia and China. International community is persuading New Delhi to join APHC and Pakistan at the peace table and seek a peaceful settlement of Jammu and Kashmir issue.
Interestingly, Pakistan High Commissioner to India Abdul Basit, in a recent statement, while expressing desire to meet APHC representative, said that the Hurriyat is the true representative of the people of Jammu and Kashmir state. Islamabad also signalled to hold a dialogue with India over a wide range of issues, including terrorism and Jammu and Kashmir. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has also invited top Kashmiri-Pakistani leader Syed Ali Geelani to visit Pakistan.
The plight of Kashmiris can be judged from the fact that few weeks back, Lieutenant General DS Hooda of Indian Northern Command confirmed life sentence of a Summary General Court Martial of Indian Army Colonel Dinesh K. Pathania , Major Upendra, Havildar Devendra Kumar, Lance Naik Lakhmi, Lance Naik Arun Kumar and Rifleman Abbas Hussain in Machil fake encounter in which innocent Kashmiri Muslims in India-held Jammu and Kashmir were killed, after dubbing them as infiltrator from Pakistan. In fact, the Indian Army had to take this decision after widespread demonstrations in which over 125 protests were killed by Indian security forces.
In a strange decision, Kerala High Court legalized establishment of polling stations in Madaris on the ground that a Madrassa is neither a place of religious worship nor does it have religious significance. Madrassa only means a building which houses a school. After such incidents, Kashmiri leaders rightly said that India was proving Pakistan’s Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah’s two-nation theory right. Last month, a division bench of Jammu and Kashmir High Court directed the Director-General of Police to ensure that appropriate directions to all SSPs, SPs and SHOs of all districts and Police Stations in Indian held Jammu and Kashmir that there shall be no sale of beef across the State. Although, Indian held Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Mufti MuhammadSayeed has condemned the killing of an alleged cow smuggler by Hindu mob but action will only be taken these culprits.
Despite dark past record of US administration in solving issues like Kashmir and Palestine, the people of Jammu and Kashmir state are still hopeful that the President Barack Hussain Obama is going to take personal pain in providing an opportunity to Kashmiris to express their right of self-determination on the basis of UNSC Resolutions. It is the responsibility of world community to pressurize New Delhi to abide by UNSC Resolutions.
However, it seems that the International Organizations such as UN and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) have sold their conscience and are mere spectators, waiting for the extinction of all those who are fighting for their basic rights. Syed Ali Shah Geelani had rightly said “If the UN is serious, they should visit the jails and families of the victims of Indian state sponsored terrorism. The United Nations Security Council passed resolutions for granting right of self-determination to Kashmiris in the shape of plebiscite but no country has moral courage to get the Resolutions implemented.
