Law Minister briefs House on formation of TRC

The government has informed the meeting of the Legislature-Parliament on Monday about the formation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and the Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances.

Minister for Law, Justice, Constituent Assembly and Parliamentary Affairs Narahari Acharya, who is also looking after the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction, informed the House that a meeting of the Council of Ministers has constituted a committee for recommending the office-bearers to these commissions.

These commissions have been entrusted with the responsibility of carrying out investigation into the serious cases of human rights violations and of finding out the status of the people .

The recommendation committee comprises former Chief Justice Ombhakta Shrestha as the chairman and Sapana Pradhan Malla, Ghanshyam Lal Das and Pradip Pokhrel as members and a Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction as the member secretary.

The committee comprises Chief Judge at the Appellate Court Keshav Prasad Mainali as the chairman, Dr Raj Kumar Rai, Gita Mainali and Dipendra Jha as members and a Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction as the member secretary.

The committee under the chairmanship of Mainali will recommend on the works to be carried out by the government and the government would carry forward necessary process on the basis of the committee's recommendation.

 

 Gautam to act  behalf of Prime Minister

The  cabinet decided to designate Deputy Prime Minister Bamdev Gautam to act on behalf of Prime Minister Sushil Koirala, who left for medical treatment for the US on Monday.

According to Minister Dr Rijal, the cabinet today decided to appoint Dr Bijan Pant as the development and social advisor to the Prime Minister. His position will be honorary. Likewise, former Secretary Rameshwar Khanal has been appointed the Chair of the Rastrapati Chure Tarai Madhesh Preservation Development Committee.

The Council of Ministers decided to appoint Jit Bahadur KC as the head of the National Investigation Department with effect from the day he was designated as the Acting Chief and Sharada Prasad Subedi the Chairperson of the Landless Squatters Problem Resolution Commission.

The government has appointed Prof. Dr Parasar Koirala the Chairman of the University Grants Commission and Man Bahadur Nepali the Chair of the National Dalit Commission, according to Dr Rijal.

Likewise, Joint-secretaries Shanker Koirala, Arjun Karki and Mahashram Sharma have been designated as the Acting Regional Administrators of central, western and eastern regions, respectively.

The cabinet meeting   also approved taking additional loan of USD 15 million from the European Investment Bank for the Tanahu Hydropower Project.
